We Can’t Wait

We are all tired. Some of us are tired of working from home. Some of us are tired of waiting to get to work again. We are tired of cooking and doing the dishes for what seems like the millionth time. We want our kids to go back to school. We want to hug our friends. We want things to feel normal again.

We keep thinking about “when this is over….”

But ALS has no respect for COVID-19. It is not waiting patiently on the sidelines while we deal with this new interloper. Every 90 minutes, someone is either diagnosed with ALS or dies from the disease. While we are waiting for things to go back to normal, a person with ALS must face the fact that their average life expectancy is 2 to 5 years, regardless of how long this other pandemic lasts.

All of this is why we can’t wait. We can’t wait to find new treatments. We can’t wait to find a cure.

But we cannot do it alone. We need our entire community’s help. We need you. How?

Even now, Congress is considering funding for next year. Register to become and advocate and let your congressperson or senator know that funding for ALS research and treatments is important to you. Every phone call, email or letter matters.

Even in a world of social distancing, we are finding ways to raise awareness, and dollars, in the fight to defeat ALS. You can participate in the Kimmswick 5K & 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk virtually this August 8. Our Swing for a Cure golf tournament is celebrating its 25th Anniversary, and there are still a few slots available to play at historic Glen Echo Country Club—with appropriate safety precautions, of course—on Friday, August 21. And for the first time ever, everyone can participate in our virtual dinner auction on Thursday, August 20. And for those in central Illinois, we are bringing the Springfield Walk to Defeat ALS to you this year on September 26. Register now and find out how you can #ALSWalkYourWay.

We were so excited so many from the St. Louis community joined us—from their streets, driveways, living rooms—for the 2020 St. Louis Walk to Defeat ALS in June. Even though we couldn’t all gather together in Forest Park, the sense of community you shared through the #ALSWalkYourWay hashtag was incredible. You can still help us as we try and reach our goal by donating today. Every dollar helps us in the search for treatments, and a cure.

We have said it before, but we know ALS doesn’t stop, and neither do we. We can’t wait to help people with ALS live longer and to live better. We can’t wait to find new treatments and a cure. We can’t wait for a world without ALS.
